Cloth talk..

Here is what I love in cloth:

Apple Cheeks diapers. OMG I just discovered them, got them at babyhalfoff.com where I got like all my new diapers for cheap cheap cheap. They are pockets and are so soft and trim. I stuff them with a tri-folded prefold and voila, diaper love.

I also got some Dream -Eze All in One’s from BHO and they look good, are super great for absorbency, have an awesome snap system but are super duper bulky and can’t be adjusted for less bulk. I love them for home use but not so much for on the road/fitting in clothes/car seat use.

I love my Thirsties pocket optional diapers, we use these all the time, only downside is the velcro which catches on everything and annoys me.

In the all in one department, I would much rather buy sized diapers then one size, I have only 4 one size and I find them sloppy looking.

I overall preffer all in one’s to fitteds and even prefolds to fitteds. I like all in one’s for convenience and fit.
I like prefolds for ease of travel, I can so easily throw 6 prefolds and 2 covers in the diaper bag and get through a whole day out.
I like fitteds ONLY for night time use and using around the house cover free for breath-ability factor. Of the too many fitteds I have now, I love my 3 Goodmama’s hands down, best of all, although they are the bulkiest, they can stay dry, cover free, for like 3 hours. My other fitted’s are soaked after 2 hours easy. I like my Thirsties Fab Fitted for softness factor, but the absorbency is crap compared to my GM’s. I think I would be open to selling off/passing down my entire fitted stash and just keep 4-6 Goodmama’s around.

Now that I am knee deep in cloth diapering, I think my stash will look like this with nextbebe-
6  infant prefolds (used as doublers in pockets later)
12-15 prefolds
4 waterproof covers
2 wool covers
4-6 Goodmama’s fitteds
10-12 Sized All in one’s (Sm is still fitting Evangeline at 5 months, except Dream Eze were she is MM)

We have been doing diaper laundry 2x a week here, no issues with that.

How bout you? What do you like/dislike, what do you think your best stash would look like.

Here are some cute cloth sporting pics to finish us off:

β€œLife is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.” β€” Albert Einstein. When it feels like your world has been shattered, and you have reached rock bottom, you must make a choice: Stay where you are and fade away, or keep moving forward. Thankfully I chose to move forward and was blessed with the two most wonderful children after the death of my first in early labor. Things are looking up.

  1. We started out in just prefolds and Thirsties covers. Around 9 or 10 months, we bought our first pocket diapers and didn’t love them at first… but now I swear by them. We have 3 Tiny Tush, 1 Happy Heinies (with snaps), and 2 Fuzzi Bunz. The Fuzzi Bunz are my favorite, and I really hope I can find a decent sale on the new FB one-size at some point.

I just bought 6 Mommy’s Touch (one size, with snaps) because our Thirsties covers are starting to wear out (he’s been in the same size for probably over a year now – none of the smaller sizes ever wore out, but these have had a LOT of use), and I wanted something I can use again for a possible 2nd baby at some point. I’ll let you know what I think of those, once they arrive and we start using them.

  3. I’ve only got my 4 month old, but here is what I’ve discovered I like –

birth to 10-12 lbs, our infant prefolds were the way to go. The best covers were some custom covers made by a wahm mom off etsy. They were trim and kept in messes well. bumkins covers worked well, too. I tried the prowraps, but he leaked out EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I made some of my own prefolds out of flannel, and they worked well.

Now he is bigger, I am all about the pocket AIOs. He’s a chunky boy, so they don’t seem so bulky. I don’t have any GMs at all.

For around the house or short trips I use the papoose brand. I know, they are from China, and I feel bad about it now, but I got a whole stash for less than $80.

For out and about I use smartipants. I like them, and they run about $10 less than comperable diapers, and to me, they work just as well. I’m not concerned about organic or not.

At night we just use disposables. We use just one a day. We tried about 11,000 combinations for overnight, and every morning I woke up soaked. So, yup.

    • Never even heard of Papoose or Smartipants. Have to have a look. I got my stash for next to nothing I swear, about 6 gift fitteds, all my prefolds were Kijiji pre-used, I bought all my AIO’s/pockets at 50% off πŸ™‚
I still use sposies at night as well, I have never bought a single sposies, we are still going off gifts LOL from E’s baby shower. I am going to try and find an overnight cloth solution if I can though.

  5. For the longest time with EDS and right now with Shira I use mostly GMs and Bum Genius one size organic AIOs for daycare, babysitters, grandparents, quick out of the house option, or baby’s wearing skinny jeans type needs. Often people diss the BGs OS AIO, but I bet they just never waited for them to prep properly. I also have like three pocket BGs we use only has swim diapers and like ten infant prefolds I use in EDS night diaper or in a pinch with a newborn. I use thirstys sized covers, their size 2 duo (size 1 never works for me), Bummis Super Whisper Wraps, Bummis Superbrites would be okay if I liked their prints, and EDS two night covers are super felted sweater wraps from Cloth For Your Angel. Other then those I don’t have the energy for wool this time around.

My newborn diapers are a mixture of juicytoots, mutts, and kissaluv 0s. I wouldn’t change them, because what is the point? THey were bought used and served two children well. I am sure the elastics aren’t so great, but as long as I use thirsty covers the cover will contain things and Shira was only in them for three weeks. EDS was in longer, but he didn’t have to be.

I have a bunch of medium mutts that I do like, but I need to sell because I like a simple stash with just two choices and GMs just fit longer.

I might have a new opinion about bulk when it comes time for Shira to wear pants again. I’ve heard girl pants are cut slim whereas I may have sized up a bit for EDS, but he always fit nicely into jeans.

    • I don’t like the 2 Juicytoots I have, they are one size and are huge for E. even now at 6 months. Never tried Kissaluv’s but heard great things and loved the Mutt’s you sent me for when she was teeny tiny, she barely fits them anymore, but they are still in good shape, especially the polka dots one, I will be able to use them again with nextbebe. I won’t buy anymore fitteds though, I even want to downsize what I have now, I ended up with more fitted then anything else and they are overall my least favorite except GM’s.

      • I am not a fan of side snapping or the down flip on the OS Juicytoots. I think she is closing up shop though and that makes me sad because I like her has a WAHM. Her newborn diapers are probably my favorite newborn diapers.
Here is why I prefer fitteds: natural fiber next to skin, rarely leak with PUL cover, less wash issues, less wash issues equal less repelling/stink/rash, easier to use with rash creams, better fit (as in tight enough to contain but not to leave marks, older baby feels wetness, long lasting (only prefolds last longer), and a cover is like extra leak insurance.
Their disadvantages for me are bulky (in diaper bag – on butt doesn’t bother me), long dry times, harder to put on a standing baby in Target or under the winter stroller cover, etc type situations.
I bought all these pockets and all in ones when I was pregnant, because I thought I’d like them best but I got newborn fitteds (except for some xs fuzzi bunz that never fit him) and I fell in love with fitteds.

  7. I’ve been cloth diapering for over 4 years now between 2 babes. With the first, I loved me some fitteds with wool covers. I made them all myself. I also enjoyed AI2s. But with #2, I prefer pockets because #2 doesn’t like to feel wet. Most of those I bought.

I am staunchly against AppleCheeks. They are made by some women who used to run azurewraps.com here in Montreal. Azurewraps used to carry Annie Marie Padorie (AMP) brand cloth, made by a mama in Winnipeg. AzureWraps are responsible, in a decent way, with helping AMP grow. But they eventually discontinued carrying AMP and launched their own, AppleCheeks, and then closed AzureWraps. Really, they are a complete rip off. They are so similar, I don’t know how they got away with it honestly. And considering they carried AMP for years, it’s just… well, it’s disappointing that some mamas would be so awful to another fellow cloth mama.

My best stash would consist of a little bit of everything which is kind of what I already have.. a mix of home made and bought. πŸ™‚

    • Hmm I didn’t know that about Apple Cheeks, that is underhanded, here I thought I was supporting a Canadian business and felt good about it. I never came across AMP’s in my travel’s, I always buy diapers on sale and have never paid full price for anything, I got the AC’s for $8 at babyhalfoff.
