Baby wearing

I have an urge to talk about babywearing. I love wearing Miss E. Just as I knew I would. I have two wraps, well 1.5 as I haven’t finished the second one yet. I made both myself for under $15. No really, I just bought 5 yards of 50/50 linen cotton mix for $30 and will get at least two wraps from that, I got 3 from my stretchy wrap. I love wraps, I love how they distribute babies weight evenly all over my frame, I love how they keep baby pulled snug against me and I love how they look. Best of all I love the price. I also have a ring sling that I bought second hand for $20. I love my wring sling for convince, it lives in my diaper bag and is perfect to sling baby across my hip or chest to chest for a quick run into the mall or grocery store. I don’t fell as 100% confident being totally hands free with the sling as with the wrap though and tend to keep one hand behind her back as much as possible, just kinda patting her bum and reassurance for me. I can however leave her hands free for a few seconds if I need both hands and she is always just fine, so I am sure it’s my own fear in this case. I had a mom made Mei Tai but it wasent comfy for either of us, not padded well compared to a Babyhawk for instance, so I sold that and just won a brand new black organic embroidered Ergo on Ebay for $80 woot, can’t wait to try it out. I feel like my stash is complete now realisticly. In my dream world I would also a Babyhawk with the multicoloured Mexican day of the dead style skulls on it(me and my adoration of skulls) and a rainbow striped woven wrap (mine is natural/light beige coloured).

So all my baby wearing friends, what is your favorite style of carrier and why?

β€œLife is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.” β€” Albert Einstein. When it feels like your world has been shattered, and you have reached rock bottom, you must make a choice: Stay where you are and fade away, or keep moving forward. Thankfully I chose to move forward and was blessed with the two most wonderful children after the death of my first in early labor. Things are looking up.

  1. Kudos to you!

Bea seems to hate the carriers I have. I have to try harder to get her to like them – I have a ring sling, a pouch, and a modified mai tai.

But I also have a bad back… Post some pics of you two in you slings!

    • I will post a couple of baby wearing pics now, I don’t have one of the ring sling but will take one asap and post that as well as when I finish my linen wrap as well. For now all I got are pics of the home made stretchy wrap and my Ergo.
I think they just have to get used to it to be honest, Evangeline didn’t love the ring sling at first til we both got confidant, now she loves it as do I and it lives in my car for easy quick in and out stores (she hates the stroller anywhere besides a walk outdoors), she didn’t love my Mei Tai but I think it’s cause it wasen’t nice and padded like Babyhawks are and the legs wraps were hurting her thighs. She adores the Ergo, loves it and is always falling asleep in it, best purchase ever. I love stretchy wraps most of all with tiny newborns, holds them tight and secure against your heart, I like the ring sling for a quick hip sling for shopping quickly as I said and I adore the Ergo for long walks and longer shopping ventures, it was also super handy while camping for things like setting up the tent with her on my back happy as a clam.

  3. I swore by the Moby wrap. My husband liked the Karma Baby sling when L was small, then a -made mei tai when he got bigger.

  5. BTW- I think you need a photo of Evangeline in your banner now πŸ˜‰

  7. Wraps were ok when Tanner was small, but I really really loved my Ergo when he got heavy. It takes all the weight off your shoulders and back and puts it into your hips. Loved mine. Expensive though…

  9. I love my wrap. Like you, I made mine, 4 years ago for my first bebe and now it’s being used on bebe #2. I was able to make 3 wraps (95% cotton, 5% spandex) for like $40 (5m x 60″ material cut in 3 lengthwise). I kept one for myself, gave one to hubby, and freecycled the third.

I also made a hotsling style carrier, but I don’t love that one half as much as I love my wrap, probably because it’s made with a non-stretchy cotton canvas.

I wear #2 everywhere. She’s never even been in a stroller. Stroller are for outings where you need the storage and generally, that’s not us. When she’s older and heavier the stroller will come out more. πŸ™‚

  11. The Beco! I love our beco! I did have a Baby Hawk, which is great – but the long straps ended up being more inconvenient than I realized and once we got the beco – we realized just how great having the clip-on carriers were. Had I known about the beco beforehand – I would have skipped the hawk and gone straight for it instead. Ah well!

I have to say the beco saved our skin when we traveled to Australia. It made going around with Lily SO much easier than had we taken our stroller. It’s also a great conversation starter – and kind of amusing to see stroller moms look on with envy at the ease we got about with.

    • Yup I have heard nothing but good things about the Becco. I love the carriers for walking the dog. He inevitably gets himself all wrapped around the stroller so it’s much easier wearing her.
Have you had Lilly in the back carry yet?

      • When I first got it – I tried back carry, and she seemed to like it, but she was still a touch to young (3.5 months). I tried back carry again last weekend while doing chores, and it worked really well, actually. She didn’t kick up a fuss, and it was easier doing my chores with her on my back than the front. We’ll probably start trying back carry more outside now.
If we want to go for a brisk exercise walk – we’ll use our stroller, because she’s pretty heavy in the carrier, but we don’t have a dog to contend with. But when ever we go to the mall, into San Francisco, etc – Beco it is!
