Canada Votes

It’s Election day in Canada and this is a BIG Election for us (For those American readers who may be unaware)….
This is our 4th election in 7 years, see Canadian’s seem to be on the fence about what we want with our Government. The man who has been Prime Minister all this time Stephen Harper has a strong group of supporters, however, no one seems willing to fully trust him.  Harper is notorious for wanting to cut things many Canadians pride themselves on like Gay Marriage, equal rights for women, single tiered, universal health care for everyone and  access to free birth control or abortion.  All the while he is decreasing Corporate Taxes and helping big business thrive. He also hails from the only province in Canada that did want to sign off on the Kyoto Accord. Anyhow, I have never, ever, ever, been a Harper fan. Regardless, the man has won a minority Government over and over. This, to me means that people think he can do a decent job, but don’t trust him with full control of the country.

Because this Minority Government was unable to agree and work harmoniously together, ANOTHER election has been called, and Mr.Harper is seriously hoping Canada will give him a Majority Government and thus, the reigns to the country.. (Shudders) But NOT SO FAST Mr. Harper..

Many previously aloof voters are now sitting straight up and paying attention…which is cool, and important.  Now the underdog, the NDP Government headed by Mr. Jack Layton, a down to earth, people person I knew well during my years in Toronto is crawling up the side and about to threaten to prevent Mr. Harper from taking a Majority Government, which would be Historic. The Liberal party, traditionally a strong contender to Mr. Harper’s Conservative party are dropping firmly into third place for the first time in the parties history (Their leader looks like Guy Smiley from the Muppet Show to me, phony and weird)…Anyhow, this is the most exciting and scary election I have ever taken part in..I will be sitting on pins and needles all day, praying that Harper get’s his gigantic ego and sense of entitlement taken down a few notches when he has to once again, share a minority government, this time with Jack Layton breathing down his neck.

This could be a very very important day in Canada. I wait with bated breath.

β€œLife is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.” β€” Albert Einstein. When it feels like your world has been shattered, and you have reached rock bottom, you must make a choice: Stay where you are and fade away, or keep moving forward. Thankfully I chose to move forward and was blessed with the two most wonderful children after the death of my first in early labor. Things are looking up.

  1. No you are exactly right.

  2. Oh please, feel free to rant on my Blog, I am 10000000% in agreement with you. I think Harper has let the power get to his head. He now thinks he is the only person with an opinion that matters and I just pray with every thread of my being that we are able to show him otherwise. I believe he has lost the trust of the people of Canada. We already didn’t trust him enough to give him all the power, hence the minority, and now he has made himself look even worse. I don’t trust him any further then I could throw him. This is one the most important elections of the past 7 years, it’s time to loose Harper.(I think if he were to lose the PM seat he would resign as head of the Conservative party, or I can hope anyways) I just pray I am right and people are smart enough to boot him out of power once and for all.

  3. what REALLY gets me is when the people that REFUSE to vote complain about our governments and our leaders. It’s kind of like “ok, you don’t vote, refuse to, so therefore you forfeit your right to complain!”
at least from my point of view.

  4. I’ve been an interested voter for as long as I’ve been able to vote. I missed out on the ’95 referendum by -><- much I was so upset I couldn't make my choice!
As for this election, yes I think it’s very important. People complain about having this many elections in such a short time, but the only people to blame are the Conservatives. He only holds a minority, so he needs the approval of the other parties and so long as he continues with his undemocratic practices, no one’s going to support him.
A vote for Harper is a vote for the oppression of women. He’s cut funding to 75% of women’s programs across Canada claiming women are already equal so they don’t need any special interest groups. Pay equity? Pfft, right? Ugh. How can a single woman out there support his policies?
    Sorry, don’t mean to rant!
I will heading out to vote with the whole family after the baby wakes! Make it a family affair! πŸ™‚

  5. Thanks πŸ™‚ He is pretty douchetastic..IMO
He seriously reminds of a Mr. Bush we all know, but only not as dumb, he is intelligent no doubt, but holds the same values.
It REALLY Does make a difference, people need to understand that, if they don’t vote they are throwing away the right to something people die for.

  6. Mr Harper sounds like a douche. lol. Happy Election Day! I love voting. It makes me happy knowing that my vote really is helping make a difference.
