It’s Election day in Canada and this is a BIG Election for us (For those American readers who may be unaware)….
This is our 4th election in 7 years, see Canadian’s seem to be on the fence about what we want with our Government. The man who has been Prime Minister all this time Stephen Harper has a strong group of supporters, however, no one seems willing to fully trust him. Harper is notorious for wanting to cut things many Canadians pride themselves on like Gay Marriage, equal rights for women, single tiered, universal health care for everyone and access to free birth control or abortion. All the while he is decreasing Corporate Taxes and helping big business thrive. He also hails from the only province in Canada that did want to sign off on the Kyoto Accord. Anyhow, I have never, ever, ever, been a Harper fan. Regardless, the man has won a minority Government over and over. This, to me means that people think he can do a decent job, but don’t trust him with full control of the country.
Because this Minority Government was unable to agree and work harmoniously together, ANOTHER election has been called, and Mr.Harper is seriously hoping Canada will give him a Majority Government and thus, the reigns to the country.. (Shudders) But NOT SO FAST Mr. Harper..
Many previously aloof voters are now sitting straight up and paying attention…which is cool, and important. Now the underdog, the NDP Government headed by Mr. Jack Layton, a down to earth, people person I knew well during my years in Toronto is crawling up the side and about to threaten to prevent Mr. Harper from taking a Majority Government, which would be Historic. The Liberal party, traditionally a strong contender to Mr. Harper’s Conservative party are dropping firmly into third place for the first time in the parties history (Their leader looks like Guy Smiley from the Muppet Show to me, phony and weird)…Anyhow, this is the most exciting and scary election I have ever taken part in..I will be sitting on pins and needles all day, praying that Harper get’s his gigantic ego and sense of entitlement taken down a few notches when he has to once again, share a minority government, this time with Jack Layton breathing down his neck.
This could be a very very important day in Canada. I wait with bated breath.
